Kevin McDonnell grew up on a small farm in the West of Ireland. The youngest of eight children, times were often difficult and he learnt from a young age that working hard did not necessarily make you rich. His father believed in securing a good job, working hard for a company and having a pension to retire on. Kevin followed this path and went to University to study Quality Management. However, after qualifying and finding the job he spent all those years studying for he hated it and felt trapped. In 2002, aged 24 he decided to leave Ireland and look to achieve his dreams in the UK. He started working as a Quality Manager for an Irish Construction Company, working 60+ hours per week and although better paid than in Ireland all bills were higher and within a couple of years he was no further forward on his journey than when he arrived, all he had was less time!!
In 2004 he attended a property education seminar in London and during the presentation decided that the cost of training was too expensive and so with no property education he set about building a portfolio and made the costly mistake of investing in 3 Properties in Eastern Europe which over the next 3 years left him with £135k of debt; One property has never even been built and another is in an apartment complex that has never opened. The lesson he says is “If you think education is expensive, try ignorance”
In 2007, with such large debt hanging over him and with a burning desire to never give up on his dream of being successful in property he wrote a credit card cheque for £12k to a property training company to teach him how to go about building a property portfolio the correct way and has since taken massive action on this learning which has enabled him to build a personal portfolio of 13 properties valued at £1.3M with over £4k a month positive cash flow and all from a starting point of £135k debt. He has since gone on to invest thousands of pounds more on his education to learn new insights, new strategies and new information and recognises the Progressive Property Community a key part of his success.
